Fossils of Maotunia iddingsi have been found in the Zhangxia Formation in Shandong Province, North China, specifically within the Megagraulos coreanicus Zone, dating it to the Drumian age. These trilobites co-existed with a diverse array of other marine life, including sponges, brachiopods, and other arthropods.
