Vendor: Gold Bugs

SKU Number: SQ8125045

A large and highly contrasted Burgess Shale Fauna, Yuknessia, from the Middle Cambrian, Pierson Cove Formation of Utah.

Yuknessia is generally found as a rather non-descript branching organism. This example is quite large and well preserved in reddish limestone.

Yuknessia was originally classed as a green alga, but has since been reinterpreted as a colonial pterobranch. These are hemichordate worm shaped animals.

Hemichordates appear in the Lower or Middle Cambrian and include two main classes: Enteropneusta (acorn worms are detritus feeders, eating sand or mud and extracting organic detritus), and Pterobranchia (small colonial worm-like filter-feeders). Full dimensions are listed below.

Additional Information

Yuknessia is a Burgess Shale fauna from the Cambrian Period that is also found in the Wheeler Shale Lagerstätte of Utah. Yuknessia belongs to the the class: Pterobranchia, a group of small worm-shaped animals. They belong to the Hemichordata, and live in secreted tubes on the ocean floor. Pterobranchia feed by filtering plankton out of the water with the help of cilia attached to tentacles.
