Additional Information

Herpetogaster is a Burgess Shale fauna from the Cambrian Period that is also found in the Pierson Cove Formation of Utah. Herpetogaster Herpetogaster is an extinct cambroernid genus that possessed a pair of branching tentacles and a tough but flexible body that curved helically to the right like a ram's horn. Herpetogaster was divided into at least 13 segments. An extensible stolon emerged from the body at the 9th segment and secured the animal to the sea floor.

The cambroernids are an unranked clade of animals that include a number of early Paleozoic genera whose affinities with other animals, living or extinct, have been uncertain.
