Additional Information

Mammuthus trogontherii

This is an ice age woolly mammoth molar. The woolly Mammoth grew 6 sets of molars throughout its life. Each set of teeth (Upper and lower) were progressively larger than the previous set. The first 3 sets of teeth were deciduous or premature teeth and have a designation of P2, P3 and P4. These were teeth that grew while the Mammoth was a juvenile. The adult teeth have a designation of M1, M2 and M3.

New teeth grew from behind the current teeth and slowly moved forward to release the current worn set of teeth. Rough measurements for tooth designation have been published and this generally helps when listing teeth for sale on fossil sites.

Mammoth teeth can also be helpful when determining a species. The number of grinding plates generally increased with later species and is thought to be the result of having a more fibrous diet.
